PLAN to Vote, and Work Your Plan

[This is a reprint of what I wrote two years ago while preparing to go to the polls.  So, note the context that mentions things like Bishop Umoette’s death in 2000.]

If we give democracy up to any one tradition, any one culture, any one social group, any one race, any one ethnic group, or even any one faith, we may give it up forever, and find ourselves living in an autocratic of some despot leader who cannot be trusted.  “Take care of democracy, and democracy will take care of you.”  VOTE.  PLAN your work, then work your plan.

Our Fourth Annual Empowerment Banquet

The fourth annual Empowerment Banquet for the Eighth Episcopal District will be at the Crosswalk Conference Center at Green Acres Baptist Church, Tyler, Texas.  The time is 6:00 PM on Friday, November 8th

Those who have supported this banquet for the last four years are responsible for about $200,000 in payments to the Department of Finance for its loan to the Eighth Episcopal District in the fall of 2010, and for more than $150,000 in aid to several churches of the Eighth Episcopal District.  (The churches are told that the aid through the empowerment banquet is for ministries or improvements to the property, but certainly not for the Conference Budget.)  I was grateful to hear several of the pastors, in their reports this summer at the annual conferences, mention their gratitude for empowerment how some of the churches used the money.

This year our speaker for the Empowerment Banquet is Bishop Kenneth Wayne Carter, presiding bishop of the Fourth Episcopal District (the work of the church in Louisiana, Mississippi, Sudan, South Sudan, and Ethiopia), who was elected in 2006 from what is now the Dallas-Fort Worth/Northwest Texas Conference.

This is my opportunity to say “Thank You” to you for the tickets you have purchased to the banquet, for the ads you have placed in the souvenir book to support the occasion, and for your presence.  The food is good; the program is good; and the ambience of the venue is good.

                                                              Bishop Lawrence Reddick

FIGHTING HUNGER

Jamaica Outreach

These are pictures of the corn field in Jamaica resulting from the purchase of seeds by the Dallas-Fort Worth Northwest Texas Region WMS. The produce will be free to people in the community in an effort to alleviate hunger. They decided to grow one product to feed many rather than grow several different types of produce.
